FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHEN AND WHERE?

We hold auditions at the beginning of the school year during the first week of the fall semester and sometimes in the spring semester. Be on the lookout for us at the activities fair to grab a flyer and ask us questions! The flyer will have information with dates of auditions and where they will be held. We also post this information on all of our social media accounts.

HOW DO I SIGN UP?

We will have a sign-up sheet at the activities fair where you can sign up for a time block. You’re also welcome to email our president to arrange a time to stop by. Although you’re not required to do so — and most of our auditionees do not — signing up for a time block ensures that you will not need to wait in line at our audition room door. If you’ve signed up for a time block, please arrive at least three minutes early to fill out our information sheet!

DO I NEED SINGING EXPERIENCE?

You definitely do not! Our members' experience ranges from vocal training to only singing in the shower or car. Some of the V's have learned to beatbox, arrange music, or sing for the first time as a group with us. Also, don't think that you need to be an expert on rock music to audition; our definition of "rock" is very broad, and often translates into cooler arrangements and more exciting solos. We just hope you love singing as much as we do!

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE?

To prepare for auditions, we recommend a verse and a chorus of a song and will accept any genre except classical, Broadway, or show tunes. We also test range and blending ability. Be comfortable and have fun, and use song lyrics if you need them! We have all been there. If you need song suggestions, visit our Concerts page or see our member bios for examples of their audition songs.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER AUDITIONS?

A list of auditionees we are calling back will be posted outside the audition room door the morning after all auditions have concluded (typically Saturday morning). We will also post a list on our social media accounts. Your callbacks will be the same weekend, so please have try to have a clear schedule on both days, especially Sunday.

For callbacks, we are looking for a verse and a chorus of a rock song. Be prepared to sing with the group! You will receive more details from us regarding what to expect for callbacks, but again, be comfortable, come with your best performing attitude, and have fun!

HOW MUCH OF A TIME COMMITMENT IS A CAPPELLA?

In a typical week, we rehearse five hours (usually Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons), excluding any gigs or special concert rehearsals. While being part of the V's can at times be a substantial commitment, we all agree that it is worth it!
